Sony’s PS5 will have slimmer design & removable disc drive, launching in November 2023
A new PS5 variant with a removable disc drive and 1TB of internal storage was officially unveiled by Sony. The PS5 “Slim,” as it is commonly known, is a new model that will ultimately replace the original PS5 and the PS5 Digital Edition. The new model, with the drive included, will cost $499.99 in the US, while the PS5 Digital Edition goes for $449.99.
The new model PS5 has the option to add an Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Drive to the PS5 Digital Edition, and both the standard PS5 and PS5 Digital Edition come with 1TB of storage. When compared to prior versions, the new PS5 has a volume reduction of more than 30% and a weight reduction of 18% and 24%, respectively. There are four individual panels making up the cover, the upper two of which are glossy while the below two are matte. Sony’s PS5 features a removable side panel that conceals a bulge for the disc drive.
According to a blog post by Sid Shuman, senior director of SIE content communications, “there are four separate cover panels,” with the top portion sporting a glossy finish while the bottom remains in matte.” Sony is selling the PS5 Blu-ray Disc Drive as a separate accessory for $79.99 (€119.99 / £99.99) for those who initially purchase the PS5 Digital Edition.
Instead of the single USB-C and USB-A port on the current PS5, there are now two of each on the front of the system. In addition to the standard horizontal stand, this new PS5 model will also be compatible with a new vertical stand that can be purchased for $29.99 (€29.99 / £24.99 GBP). There is now 1TB of storage on both PS5 variants, up from 825GB on the original console.
In the United States, the new PS5 model will be available in November for $449.99 without a drive and $499.99 with one at select retailers and through Sony’s PlayStation direct site. “It will continue to roll out globally in the following months,” Shuman says. The existing PS5 model will no longer be available after stock runs out, making way for the new PS5. It will cost €449.99 for the Digital Edition and €549.99 with the drive in Europe, while in the United Kingdom, the price will be £479.99 for the drive and £389.99 for the Digital Edition of the PlayStation 5.
