Takeaways from 2023-24 NBA GM Survey : NBA title watch: Nuggets and Celtics, Nikola Jokić top MVP candidate

The events leading up to the 2023–24 NBA season are sure to have fans on the edge of their seats. Since the end of the 2022–2023 season, the league has witnessed a significant amount of movement from high-profile players, and other unexpected occurrences could be on the horizon. On Monday, the findings of the annual general manager survey were released, and there is a great deal that can be learned from the responses that the top brass of each of the 30 teams provided. There were a lot of things that were anticipated, but some of the outcomes were completely unexpected. Let’s go into the important points that deserve our attention.

Favored to win title

  • Denver Nuggets: 33 percent
  • Boston Celtics: 33 percent
  • Milwaukee Bucks: 23 percent
  • Phoenix Suns: 7 percent
  • Los Angeles Clippers 3 percent

Despite the fact that the Milwaukee Bucks have become the odds-on favorites (+375) to win the NBA championship after trading for Damian Lillard, general managers do not feel that the Eastern Conference juggernaut will win its second NBA championship in four years. They gave the Bucks 43 percent of the votes because, prior to the 2022-2023 season, they believed that the Bucks had the best chance of winning the championship by a wide margin. However, the younger generation believes that the Boston Celtics and the Denver Nuggets have the best opportunity to bring the Larry O’Brien Championship Trophy back to their respective cities. Although Milwaukee has some star power, it seems like Denver’s solid core, focused around Nikola Joki, and Boston’s active summer moves are more persuasive than Milwaukee’s star power.

MVP

  • Nikola Jokić: 43 percent
  • Giannis Antetokounmpo: 20 percent
  • Jayson Tatum: 13 percent
  • Luka Dončić: 10 percent

This year’s poll is full of praise for Denver’s two-time MVP and the MVP of the NBA Finals. Big guy finished second to Joel Embiid last season, but he’s the overwhelming choice among GMs for 2023-24 despite receiving zero votes in last year’s poll. Many individuals have changed their minds after seeing the Warriors win an NBA title and demonstrate consistent dominance on the road to the finals. Being an outsider in the MVP race for the third year in a row also works in his favor. Doni’s support has plummeted after he received 48% of the vote in 2017. After failing to make the postseason with the Dallas Mavericks last season, the team’s star player will have to prove himself again with Kyrie Irving.

Best offseasons

  • Milwaukee Bucks: 23 percent
  • Boston Celtics: 23 percent
  • Portland Trail Blazers: 17 percent
  • Los Angeles Lakers: 13 percent
  • Dallas Mavericks: 7 percent
  • Houston Rockets: 7 percent

The Celtics countered the Bucks’ signing of the market’s top free agent by trading for Kristpaps Porzingis, a towering sharpshooter, and by trading for Jrue Holiday, a member of last year’s All-Defensive Team. The Blazers got a lot of talent, including Deandre Ayton, Robert Williams, and Malcolm Brogdon, in exchange for their superstar. Houston is the only other team on list that is not anticipated to make a postseason run. Key veterans Fred VanVLeet and Dillon Brooks, who both know how to defend and win, were added to the Rockets’ roster.

Best defenders

  • Giannis Antetokounmpo: 40 percent
  • Jrue Holiday: 13 percent
  • Draymond Green: 10 percent
  • Marcus Smart: 10 percent
  • Jaren Jackson: 10 percent
  • Kawhi Leonard: 7 percent

Last year, Antetokounmpo received nearly half (48%) of the voting for NBA’s greatest defender. Over four other former DPOY winners, he was once again the frontrunner heading into the 2023–24 season. However, Bam Adebayo of the Miami Heat is noticeably absent. The 26-year-old center, who has been the defensive backbone of his team for the past five years, failed to garner a single vote in this year’s DPOY poll. Even though he didn’t make any All-Defensive teams last year, that’s still unexpected.

Voted most likely to win Rookie of the Year

  • Victor Wenbanyama: 50 percent
  • Scoot Henderson: 27 percent
  • Chet Holmgren: 20 percent
  • Sasha Vezenkov: 3 percent

It’s not shocking that the 2023 NBA Draft class’s consensus generational talent blew the competition out of the water. The San Antonio Spurs center is widely considered to be the team’s first offensive option and a future dominant force on both ends of the floor. Both Henderson and Holmgren’s teams have a slew of young, promising guards, but Henderson’s team has an All-NBA point guard at the helm. Although Vezenkov, 28, is an underdog, he just won the EuroLeague Most Valuable Player award.

Voted biggest steal on 2023 NBA Draft

  • Cam Whitmore (20), Houston Rockets: 43 percent
  • Keyonte George (16), Utah Jazz: 10 percent
  • Scoot Henderson (3), Portland Trail Blazers: 10 percent
  • Jaime Jaquez Jr. (18), Mimai Heat: 10 percent
  • Brandon Podziemski (19), Golden State Warriors: 7 percent

Whitmore was projected to go in the top five of the draft but fell to the 20th pick instead. The Villanova product may have some competition for MVP honors from his team’s wing players, despite averaging 20.4 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 3.0 steals per game in his inaugural NBA Summer League. Many believe that the Charlotte Hornets should have selected Henderson over Brandon Miller with their third overall pick, despite the fact that Henderson may not have technically qualified as a steal. Only time will tell if either of these freshmen can live up to the tremendous standards set for them.
